7th Grade Exploration Unit Study

Exploration Unit of Study
In the seventh grade we will focus on three key units of study, exploration, slavery and immigration. We will study historical situations as well as modern day examples of theses topics. In each unit, students will read at least two historical novels and complete a variety of projects. Please discuss the ideas your child is navigating with him/her and how it has impacted the world.
In the Exploration Unit of Study, we will be interacting with the website Exploration Through the Ages. A link to this website is available on my blog. This website will give students a great base to understand world exploration and other cultures. We will study the exploration of the American West by Lewis and Clark as a class. Our culminating project will be an explorer report card as well as a display on the information that the students gather in their research.
Projects descriptions and due dates:
Exploration Myth Comparisons
Students will read a variety of myths concerning early exploration and compare the myths. We will discuss how these varying myths have so much in common.
Students will use graphic organizers to compare the different myths.
Due November 21.
Historical Fiction Individual Choice
This assignment will feature historical novels by Scott O’Dell. His work captures the effects of exploration of the New World by European Settlers.
All these novels are available at the Asheville/Buncombe libraries. Students will select a book from the following choices:
Sing Down the Moon
Thunder rolling in the Mountains

Serpent Never Sleeps
The Captive
Carlota
Books Previewed on November 14.

We will also use a website called Xpedition Hall. This website can be found on my blog as well.
Family Connection-As stories come up in the news about the need for new energy sources, have discussions with your loved one about the pros and cons of exploring new areas of energy.
As always, I will accompany all of the assignments with rubrics and grading expectations. Students are more than welcome to get started on projects as soon as they would like.

8th Grade Revolution Unit Study

American Revolution Unit Study
In the 8th Grade we will study the foundation of The United States and how the government works. Our major units of study for the year are as follows: Revolution, Civil War, Economic Justice.
In the Revolution unit of study, students will study about America’s Revolution and Revolutions throughout the world. We will compare and contrast America’s Revolution and its founding documents with other revolutions and their causes. The following is a list of projects that we will be working on in class to help students understand America’s founding and influence.
Projects and Due Dates:
Illustrated Timeline of Revolution
Students will look at several revolutions throughout history. Students will create drawings that summarize the events of other reforms. We will pay particular attention to why they happened and their effects.
Project Assigned November 21.
Project Completed November 26.
Electronic Field Trip
We will take an electronic field trip to Independence Hall. This link can be found on my blog.
Tinker, Tailor, Sailor
Students will use the Library of Congress and primary resources to understand the differences that geography has on technology and people.
Created Equal
As a class, we will use the Library of Congress website to see what was meant by the term “all men are created equal.”
Student will gather evidence and craft a letter to support his/her opinion on the phrase.
As extensions, students will do the following:
Stage a mock trial with the students playing the roles of Jefferson and others. The American Memory materials serve as evidence to be presented in a trial. Include a judge, witnesses, jury, defense lawyers, and prosecution.
Write a persuasive letter to his/her Congressman to take action on an issue of personal importance.
Revolution Lit. Study
Students will read either Johnny Tremain or Sarah Bishop to gain a deeper understanding of the personal conflicts people felt during America’s Revolution. They will participate in literature circles to discuss the novels’ topics.
Books Assigned November 7.
The Lit. Study will take place the week of November 17-21 or December 1-5
Individual Historical Fiction Lit. Studies
Students will choose at least one historical fiction novel to read on their own. These novels will give the students an even greater understanding of the issues surrounding revolution and reform.

The computer test is coming up. The students will test on basic knowledge and performance of computer applications. As a way to study, students will access games and PowerPoints. They are more than welcome and encouraged to study on their own as well. These activities can be found at my blog.
Family Connection-HBO put out a wonderful series, John Adams, about the formation of our country. The first disc is especially useful for building context about the Revolution and the dilemmas facing the colonies.
As always, I will accompany all of the assignments with rubrics and grading expectations. Students are more than welcome to get started on projects as soon as they would like.
