Convention Extra Credit
The Democratic Convention will be televised August 25-28 and the Republican National Convention will be televised Spet. 1-4. The idea is to raise awareness about how the political parties will try to solve the issues facing America.

Library Trips
Dear Parents,
We are off to a great start. We had a terrific field trip to the park to celebrate the formation of our Middle School Agreements and the completion of our first full week of school.
This Friday, August 29, we will be heading to the West Asheville Library for the first of nine walking field trips to the library. We will be leaving campus around noon and returning by 2:00. In the future, students will go on the last scheduled Thursday of the month during their language arts class period. I have listed the rest of the dates below:
September 25
October 30
November 20
December 18
January 29
February 26
March 26
April 30.
Why do we go?
The students are such voracious readers at FDNSC that my classroom library cannot keep up. We will also take these trips to gather research resources for social studies and science.
When do we go?
Seventh graders will leave campus at 11:30 and return by 1:00.
Eighth graders will leave campus at 9:30 and return by 11:00.
Where do we go?
The West Asheville Library on Haywood Road.
What do students need to go?
Students must a have a library card to go after 8/29. Students without library cards will work on language arts in other 7/8 grade classrooms.
How do books get returned or renewed on time?
There is a link on my blog, www.tedsclass.blogspot.com, that students can access to renew books. I also return books to the library every Friday afternoon. It is the students' responsibility to keep up with their own due dates.
What if I don't want my child/loved one checking out a certain type of book?
Please send an email or a note in to me letting me know what types of books you do not want your child/loved one taking home. I will do my best to monitor his/her library checkouts.
How can I help?
If you would like to walk with us, please send me an email, ted@fdnsc.net, and let me know what days you plan on walking with us.

Middle School Agreements
You will find our middle school agreements listed below. Please show them to your parents and post a comment about how you help to uphold these agreements. Please include your parents email address.
The 7th and 8th students of Francine Delany New School for Children, class of 2010 and 2009 respectively, have created the following set of agreements to help everyone: students, teachers, parents and learning community members reach their hopes and dreams. In order to achieve these goals we will keep our SHOEs tied!

Nightly Reading Homework
Research shows that the best way to gain fluency and broaden vocabulary is to spend quality time with books at a students current reading level. Each night I will expect students to read fro at least forty-five minutes. Students will do most of their responding to literature in class to specific mini-lessons. Please help to ensure that your child/loved one is spending time reading each night. This is the best way to ensure academic success.

We have the pleasure of working with some of the best seventh and eighth graders in Western North Carolina. Since this is the beginning of school, students and teachers have been sharing hopes and dreams. We would like to know what your hopes and dreams for your son/daughter/loved one are?
Please take a few minutes to share what you want him/her to accomplish this school year. You can respond in a letter or send an email to anyone of the seventh/eighth grade teacher team: Lindsey@fdnsc.net , ted@fdsnc.net, tom@fdsnc.net. We have divided the accomplishments into two areas:
What academic gains do you wish for him/her?
What social goals do you have for her/him?

Back to School
Another year is just around the corner. I am looking forward to working with all of you this year. I have exciting lessons planned to raise the interest level in both Language Arts and Social Studies. See you soon.
